Trafficking in Human Beings
Belarus has a new criminal code provision on Trafficking of People, which entered into force on January 1, 2001. Article 181 of the criminal code prohibits Trafficking of People and does identify trafficking as a specific offense in the criminal code.

The definition of trafficking does not include the list of acts, means, and end purposes included in the Protocol definition. Article 181 prohibits any action in which the intent is to sell, purchase or "undertake other types of activities regarding turning over or obtaining a dependent person," and these activities are then referred to in parentheses as trafficking in people. Several end purposes are listed, but as aggravating factors increasing penalties rather than as part of the crime.
A person convicted of the general offense of trafficking in persons can be punished by arrest of up to 3 months, by restriction of freedom up to 3 years or by imprisonment of up to 6 years with the option of confiscation of property. If the offense is committed against someone the perpetrator knows to be a juvenile, against two or more persons, with the end purpose of "sexploitation or other type of exploitation," with the end purpose of using the victim
