Rules for the Government of Prisons, 1987

Adopted 27 March 1987 (S.I. No. 90/1987)

I, GERARD COLLINS, Minister for Justice in exercise of the powers conferred on me by section 12 of the General Prisons (Ireland) Act, 1877 (as adapted by the General Prisons Board (Transfer of Functions) Order, 1928 (S. R. & O., No. 79 of 1928)), and with the approval of the Government, hereby make the following rules:

1. These Rules may be cited as the Rules for the Government of Prisons, 1987.

2. The Interpretation Act, 1937 (No. 38 of 1937), applies to these Rules.

3. Until the 31st day of December, 1989, the medical officer of a prison shall, for the purpose of Rule 172 (1) of the Rules for the Government of Prisons, 1947 (S. R. & O., No. 320 of 1947), only attend persons confined in the prison and, accordingly, the said Rule 172 (1) shall be construed until that date as if it only required the medical officer to attend all sick prisoners.

EXPLANATORY NOTE

These Rules provide that, until the 31st day of December, 1989, the medical officer of a prison shall only attend prisoners. Before the making of these Rules the medical officer of a prison was also required, by Rule 172 (1) of the Rules for the Government of Prisons, 1947, to attend certain officers and servants of the prison and their families.
